JAKARTA, Indonesia, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In line with the Republic of Indonesian independence 64th anniversary, Indonesia has successfully held the Sail Bunaken 2009.
This event was also followed by fleet review participants from 33 countries, 158 yachts rally, the coming up of two mass diving world record which was recorded in the Guinness Book of Record, and the symposium on waters territory control in South East Asia and the IUU Fishing control.
Maritime affairs and Fisheries minister, Freddy Numberi, concurrently chairman of the 2009 Sail Bunaken national organizing committee expressed gratitude to all parties who had cooperated in carrying out the 2009 Sail Bunaken in Manado, North Sulawesi province on August 12-20, 2009.
The major event has proved to the world that Indonesia is the largest maritime and islands state. In the national level, it is necessary to set the maritime and fisheries sector as the prime mover of the national development.
As the follow up of the World Ocean Conference (WOC) and Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit 2009 which was successfully conducted in last May, and turned out the Manado Ocean Declaration (MOD) and Leaders Declaration of CTI, the success of the Sail Bunaken 2009, has stepped up the Indonesian positive image, and also showed the country's achievement in the maritime sports and tourism as well as strengthening the seamen brotherhood.
In the Sail Bunaken, the yacht rally was participated in by 163 yachts from 25 countries and manned by 510 crew members, with their route by sailing around the Indonesian islands and visited 18 cities.
The major Sail Bunaken followed the largest Atlantic rally which was participated in by followers from Asia, America, Africa, Europe and Australia.
There were two routes for the Sail Bunaken participants namely from Darwin, Australia started on July 18 and went through Saumlaki, Maluku province on July 21, 2009. Another route, starting from Kinabalu (Malaysia) on August 3, 2009 through Tarakan, East Kalimantan (Indonesia), arrived in Bitung, North Sulawesi on August 12 and joined in the Sail Bunaken.
As part of the Sail Bunaken 2009, a under-water red-and-white flag hoisting ceremony was also held for 30 minutes in the Malalayang Beach, Manado, North Sulawesi in commemorating the Indonesian independence.
This ceremony was supported by the Indonesian Navy, Maritime affairs and Fisheries ministry (DKP), the Indonesian Diving Sports Association (POSSI), including the North Sulawesi provincial government.
The underwater flag hoisting ceremony was followed by 2,486 divers and became the new world record of the mass diving, and it was better than the previous day at the same place which was followed by 2,465 divers.
A total of 76 foreigners, the Indonesian civilian and military personnel also joined in the mass diving.
In 2006, the mass diving in Maldives was followed by 958 divers, in Thailand in 2005 followed by 725 divers and in Australia in 2004 followed by 600 divers.
The peak of the Sail Bunaken 2009 was the fleet review and sailing pass which took place in Teluk Manado on August 19, 2009.
The participants taking part in the peak event were 31 warships, 3 tall ships, 42 yachts, 15 government boats and 40 fishing boats.
The international event which was attended by coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, Widodo AS was also warmly welcomed by a great number of people in Manado beach.
In addition, two international seminars were held in the Ritzy Hotel, Manado, namely a seminar touching on the Illegal Fishing eradication with the title "Intensifying Action to Minimize Illegal Fishing" was conducted on August 15-16, and another seminar about the Regional Security Implementation in South East Asia under the topic "Building a Comprehensive Maritime Security in South East Asia Region" on August 18, 2009.
The seminars were also attended by 16 Navy chiefs of staffs from 16 countries, including representatives of international and multilateral institutions.
Several supporting activities which took place from August 12 to 20, 2009 and attended by many people among other things on the stage musical performance, fireworks party, industrial and maritime tourism exhibition, culture and food festival and the city parade.
