High Waves and Strong Winds Halt Sea Transportation In Aceh

The Jakarta Globe

High waves and heavy winds in the Mallaca Strait and Indian Ocean near Aceh province have seen four ships refused permission to sail.

Teuku Ridha, the head of Banda Aceh’s River, Lake and Ferry Transportation Department (ASDP) Teuku Ridha said on Wednesday that waves were between two and three meters high and wind speed has been between 6 to 10 knots per hour.

In order to prevent a sea accident, the ASDP decided to stop sea transportation until the weather returns to normal.

“The weather is unfriendly at the moment. We are making this decision for safety reasons,” Teuku Ridha told Metro TV.

He asked people affected by the delays to be patient. Fishermen were also told to be extra cautious in the bad weather.

An Aceh maritime official, M Adli Abdullah, encouraged fishermen to delay going to sea because of the extreme conditions.

“During the bad weather, don’t force going fishing,” Adli said.
